A Goatherd’s Palaver Clackety-Clacks And thus I see among these pleasant things, Eche care decayes, and yet my sorrow springs. - Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey In those Alpine times of youthful feelings, our hearts yodeled blandishments of agony. To make mores worse, I learned in church that unless I paced a fine line following choice Bible verses, I’d be dicing a bad-order to hell. At fourteen, I prayed for the gaze of the new girl whose mullet jostled like a rollercoaster. I dreamt a Song of Solomon: her cheeks spun like roller-skates in the Whalley Stardust, her mascara as occluding as Phoenix Metaphysical Books, her hair, a stage for heavy metal quakes and pyroclastics. I sweated hours into drawing her flowers of my affections. Prayers unanswered, my soul slouched into an iron maiden forgery.
